Revolution and Pie: Cindy Sheehan's Vegan/Organic Pumpkin Pie Recipe

Revolution and Pumpkin Pie
Cindy Sheehan

Some may know me as an anti-war activist who was “activated” after the murder (J’accuse l’empire) of my son Casey Sheehan in Iraq. Some may even know that I am a revolutionary that (among other things) advocates for a grassroots, peaceful revolution to wrest control from that empire to the people. How does “home cooking” jive with that?

In this nation of fast-foodaholics, I am into the “slow-food” movement and eating as close to the original food as possible. No processed/fast food shall cross my lips, mostly because it’s healthier, but partly because I don’t want my valuable cash money to go to support Monsanto, Big Ag, and Big Food Conglomerates.

I am also vegan, so I am constantly searching for yummy vegan alternatives to processed food that use animal products. To this end, I am happy to share my delicious vegan, organic recipe for Pumpkin Pie, a seasonal favorite.

Anyway, this is how: Choose an organic pie pumpkin (obtainable at Trader Joes). One is plenty for one pie—you may be able to stretch the pulp for two, or have some left over for custard.

Cut off the top of the pumpkin, as one would do if you were getting ready to carve it. (NOTE: We tried to grow our own pumpkins this season, but the blossoms did not get pollinated, unfortunately...)

Scoop out as much of the innards as possible, and set aside to pick out the seeds to roast in the oven. Cut the cleaned out pumpkin into smaller pieces and then clean the pumpkin detritus out further. (Oh, while you are doing all this, preheat your oven to 350).

Roast the pieces (skin down) on a shallow roasting pan at 350 for 55 minutes until the pieces are fork-tender. (No oil is needed for the roasting.) The above process is incredibly easy and fills your home with scrumptious smells.

Now it's easy to separate the pumpkin skin from the pulp. Do so, and put into a food processor or blender with about ½ cup of almond (or other alternative) milk.

Puree the pumpkin until smooth, leave about 2 ½ cups of the puree in the processor/blender, and then add:

1/4-cup organic brown sugar

1/4 pure maple syrup

1/4 cup of silken tofu

2 tbsp. vanilla

3 tbsp. cornstarch

ground cinnamon (to taste)

ground nutmeg (to taste)

ground ginger (to taste)

Mix all together until smooth, pour into pie crust of your choice (or into a baking dish, sans crust) and bake at 350 for about 45 minutes (until knife inserted in middle comes out clean).

Let cool, then EAT IT!

Whip some coconut cream with cane sugar (or whatever sugar you use) for a delicious vegan topping.

Note: Libby’s, which has a corner on canned pumpkin pie filling market, is a division of Nestle. Among other evil things that Nestle does, a former CEO of one of the wealthiest corporations in the world, claims that access to water is NOT a human right. Make your own filling, it’s

End Poverty in California: EPIC (WORKING FOR A PEOPLE'S POWER ECONOMY) by Cindy Sheehan

California Governor Jerry Brown is going around the world with one simple, yet profoundly wrong message, "California is Back." The problems with this statement is that it is false and that Jerry Brown is obviously out of touch with the people of the state that he "governs."

Despite the fact that California is only "back" for Brown's friends and cronies in such industries as Big Oil and Privatized Prisons, asked on NPR about the conundrum of Brown lying that California is back and the high poverty and jobless rates, Brown said the fault lies with, "So, yeah, it's (poverty) there, but it's really the flip side of California's incredible attractiveness and prosperity." Are you tired of constantly being on that "flip side?" Cindy Sheehan for Cal Gov wants California to be back for 100% of our population, not just Brown and his ilk.

How can WE End Poverty In California? First, we must defeat the lies and propaganda of the two political parties that dominate the conversation. Ask yourself: How is MY economy? How am I doing? Has Brown's "plan" made me economically secure, or am I barely keeping my head above water in this rat-race struggle? If you feel increasingly left-out of the "incredible attactiveness and prosperity" of Brown's California, join me in our EPIC campaign for peace and prosperity for all.

Cindy Sheehan for Cal Gov calls for a living wage for all jobs and gradual and increasing worker control of the means of production. Instead of the 1% owning a vast majority of the wealth and resources of the state, 100% of us should control/own 100% of the wealth and resources. The 1% can and should be absorbed into this People's Power Economy.

Cindy Sheehan for Cal Gov would work with community councils on issues that every community tragically faces in Brown's economy, like the growing homeless population and cutback of mental and physical health services. Communities, using budget councils comprised of citizens will have wider latitude in planning their own budgets to meet the needs of the people who live (indoors and out) in our towns.

Recognizing that health care is a human right and not privilege for those 1% parasites, Cindy for Cal Gov calls for Medi-Cal for all--everyone in, no one out.

The income disparity that Brown cries huge crocodile tears over is due, in no small part, to the disparity of access to education. According to the California Budget Project, our state spends 60k per prisoner per year (how much of that really "trickles down" to each prisoner?) and less than 9k per year per k-12 student. California colleges and universities are pricing students of the 99% out of the right to a higher education. We call for a return to a system where pre-school to 12th grade is fully-funded and programs like art, music, drama, and sports (not just football) are available and free to all students. Where would the money come from? Release those 44% of prisoners that have been deemed to have zero chance of recidivism and end the practice of devoting millions of our state's precious dollars to prisons for profit like Correction's Corporation of America. California is near the bottom in measurable standards for education and, if this program is followed, we could be at the top again.

Energy production and control of natural resources is a huge issue. The exploration and extraction of fossil fuels is destroying the delicate balance of our eco-system and worker control is essential for safety and to make a quick transition from fossil fuels and nuclear power to cleaner and renewable sources of energy. No worker wants to be blown up at work, nor does he/she want the planet destroyed for his/her children or grandchildren.

Resources devoted to giving Big Oil tax breaks will be devoted to this transition AND to expanding low/no cost public transportation.

Last, but not least, healthy, organic and GMO-free, food production is essential to a healthy economy and healthy state. Monsanto and Big Agra have no place in our food-production and the land will be returned to the people and collectives for healthier production and more prosperity for our farmers.

The above is a thumbnail sketch of our EPIC campaign, and the campaign feels that a successful campaign is one where we hear from YOU and is diverse and energetic. This campaign is OUR campaign. Brown and the 1% cannot be defeated unless we work together.

"I Left My Marbles in San Francisco: The Scandal of Federal Electoral Politricks" by Cindy Sheehan

Like a good American, you trudge to the polls every so often to cast your meaningless vote in pre-ordained Federal elections.

Even with much evidence that the elections are bought and paid for by the corporatocracy and manipulated through propaganda, fear and voting machine hanky-panky, we still do it. Why? And, more importantly, what can we do to change the disease-ridden, corrupt cyst-em.

With her characteristic honesty and surprising humor, Cindy Sheehan exposes this csyt-em and gives a first-hand account of her two forays into federal electoral "politricking."

The book is now out and available on Kindle with signed print books available from Cindy Sheehan.

Comandante Fringe by Cindy Sheehan

Comandante Fringe
Cindy Sheehan

Sometime last week I was contacted by the USA Today, which is apparently a "newspaper" which caters to the lunatic status quo of this country.

The paper contacted me because it received a reader question about whatever happened to me, so the paper did a video response (link below). To summarize: In 2005, I represented a growing opposition to the Iraq War, but now, I "represent a fringe." The kind of "fringe" that believes that "Nancy Pelosi is right wing."

The dude cherry picks some things from the platform of the Peace and Freedom Party (of which I am a proud member and candidate for governor of California) that he believes will offend his readers the most. However, I want to say that it is tragic that we live in a nation where the things that I fight for and believe in are considered "fringe."

These are some of the issues that the USA Today did not choose to tell its subscribers:

I believe in peace: not just the absence of war, but a society organized around the principles of non-violent conflict resolution and economic and human equality.

My heart aches at the growing income and wealth disparity in this country. I believe that it is immoral that over one million of our children don't get enough food or that millions of our fellow citizens do not have roofs over their heads each and every night. Are these humans considered disposable "fringe?" In a society where about .01% of the population own about 50% of the wealth, it makes me sick to my stomach to know that advocating for a more just distribution of wealth and resources is considered "fringe."

The USA Today somehow left out the fact that the PFP and I are an environmentalist party. I told the "reporter" that contacted me that I rode my bike across the country this year advocating for the reduction and eventual elimination of the exploration and use of fossil fuels. Of course, mainstream politicians and rags like USA Today are in the pockets of Big Oil and the destruction of life on this planet is the "normal" position. No mention was made of my urgent advocacy for an international response to contain the multiple nuclear meltdowns at Fukushima, either. Hmmm...same explanation. Ignoring radioactive Armageddon is also mainstream. I am proudly on the "fringe" for environmental sustainability and health!

I advocate for education from pre-K to University and health care as rights, not privileges for the wealthy. In most industrialized countries of the world, these positions are normal and not fringe. What about the fact that our government, the ones that are supposed to work for us, actually spy on all of our communications and collect them to mine data? This is not a fringe view or conspiracy theory, the government brags about it and people like Nancy Pelosi (the leftwinger--LOL) defend the policy.

According to the puppet man on this video, the media also stopped covering me in 2012 because I ran for VP on the Peace and Freedom Party ticket with comedian Roseanne Barr. I think the media stopped covering me (unless it wanted to marginalize me) in 2006 when the establishment figured out that I figured out the game of the "elites." It's about the system, not about Bush, or Obama. That little secret cannot get out, or there might be a revolution of we the ones who have been oppressed for generations.

I am not angry at the USA Today throwaway hotel-hall rag for participating in my demonization and marginalization, I am brokenhearted that beliefs and positions which advocate for the greatest common good are considered disordered in the nation where I was born, live, and the one that killed my son in another illegal and immoral war.

Yesterday, I battled the LA Times for the same marginalization of me and my message. One thing these attacks tell me is that the "norm" in this country is terrified of the fringe--because the fringe represents the heart and soul of what a healthy and lovely society should look like.

I am in the 99.9% majority of this world and I devote my energy, resources, heart and soul to insuring that the psychotic fringe of the .01% doesn't get away with its murder and oppression and for a world that is free from war, economic terrorism, and environmental destruction. What we stand for is good and correct, what the USA Today protects is demented and wrong.

All I can do is thank establishment propaganda tools like the USA Today and LA Times the for showing me that I am on the right path.

Lost Cause? Cindy Sheehan for CalGov Demands Fairness from the Media

November 6, 2013

To whom it may concern at the L.A. Times

From: Cindy Sheehan, Candidate for Governor of California, Peace and Freedom Party

Subject: It would be great if the L.A. Times would cease and desist deliberately mis-informing its readers

cc: The People aka The Mis-informed

I know that “Letters to the Editor” have a word limit of 150 words, but I am not writing to the editor, I am writing to not only you at the Times, but the media in general and I want the people of the State of California to be aware of what appears to be a campaign of ignoring a viable candidate for governor, namely, me.

I am writing in response to a recent article in your paper (Tea party favorite Tim Donnelly to run for governor,” Nov. 6, 2013); which, among other things, claims that this Tea Partier California Assembly Rep from SoCal is, “the sole candidate to announce a challenge to Brown.” I am not going to get into Donnelly’s flaws (which are many), in this piece, but I can’t even accuse your paper of shoddy reporting, because your paper reported on my announcement which was on August 27, (“Cindy Sheehan announces run for California governor” Aug 27, 2013) over two months before Donnelly announced. Holy Omission, Batman, the title of the article is Cindy Sheehan ANNOUNCES run for California governor. I don't know how it could be any more clear and simple than that? It is clear to me that you are simply and intentionally mis-informing and mis-leading your readers.

Your paper is fully aware that there are other candidates who have announced against Brown, but what your establishment mouthpiece really meant was that Donnelly is the only establishment candidate that has announced. Isn’t that what you meant? I can’t pretend that you weren’t aware of my candidacy, because anyone with half a brain can see that your paper is aware of it. (Unless you all have canceled your subscriptions, too?)

Reading between the lines (which is so easy to do in the establishment media), what your paper doesn’t report is as significant to those of us who bang our heads against the status quo of Republican/Democrat political monopoly as what it does write.

To recap: your paper knew that I announced; my campaign has filed paperwork with the Secretary of State; we have a public website; AND you had a reporter at my announcement, even though that person didn’t report on any of the serious matters I spoke of, he just tried to make it seem like a circus.

Along with the tragic passage of Proposition 14 (a travesty of Democracy, that your paper, not in the least bit surprisingly, endorsed), this total display of suppression of information about a serious third-party candidate also shows that the establishment is terrified of any opposing ideas, even when they come in a realm that the establishment rules: electoral politics. What are the Times and the Demo-Publican party so afraid of? The truth?

When I ran against Democrat Nancy Pelosi in then District 8 in San Francisco in 2008, even though there was another thorough media blackout of my dedicated and serious campaign, I came in second. As a non-affiliated candidate, I got twice as many votes at the Republican and almost 17% of the total vote. A crony establishment media colleague of yours, CNN, only reported on Nancy’s totals and those of the Republican. With such weak Republican candidates running, or potentially running, against Brown in 2014, there is a very real chance that I could beat the odds and come in second with Brown in June to go to the big “show” in November.

How awesome would that be to see two political opponents who actually have opposing viewpoints facing each other in a debate? Additionally, how amazing would it be for the people of California to see a candidate who would fight for them and not for big oil and private prisons, like Brown does?

This notice is a challenge to all the corporate media talking heads, even the so-called liberal and conservative ones. Give each and every candidate a fair hearing so that the people of California can make an educated and informed choice in these elections.

Money does not equal credibility or honesty for a candidate or proposition. In fact, the side with the most money is almost always the side that has sold the people down the corporate glory hole of war, environmental devastation, and economic ruin.

Give those of us who have made a conscious choice not to sell out our own principles and our human family to the highest corporate bidder a chance to express our views and vision.

Again, what are you afraid of?

A "9/11 Truther" Or "Truther" Or "Advocate For 9/11 Justice" Is Not A Terrorist by Guest Blogger Jon Gold

Jon Gold
11/2/2013

Today, a "9/11 Debunker" website decided to try and paint the LAX shooter as a "Truther."

I responded with this comment...

"Use your head, Cindy"

GUEST: DR. HELEN CALDICOTT
TOPIC: FUKUSHIMA

COMMUNITY CONFERENCE CALL

This past week, Cindy Sheehan's Soapbox hosted a community conference call with Dr. Caldicott who called in from
Australia to share her knowledge and wisdom with us.

Cindy Sheehan and the Soapbox have been calling for a comprehensive and energetic response to the disaster at Fukushima since it happened. Cindy has been on the front lines in Japan with the people there who have been in the trenches against the Japaneses government and TEPCO and we urgently and loudly demand that the international community set aside its wars and work together for the future of our planet and humankind.

CINDY IN HIROSHIMA: AUGUST 6TH, 2011

During the call, though, Dr. Caldicott was correct: we need a mass movement of people pressuring world "leaders" to devote resources to containing and cleaning Fukushima...then we can resume our lives.

Cindy Sheehan for Cal Gov Stands for Justice and With the Families of Victims of Police Brutality

-->
Cindy Sheehan for Cal Gov Stands for Justice With the Families of
Victims of Police Brutality
Cindy Sheehan

Police brutality and the increasing policy of “shoot first, ask questions second, and express fake remorse after the fact” is a very serious problem that needs some serious and thoughtful solutions that serve the people, like the police are supposed to be doing, but are failing in so many instances.

More often than not, police officers are not held accountable for their actions and family members are left feeling that they have not and will never get justice for the wrongful murders of their loved ones, who are also disproportionately young men of color, but not always.

Cindy Sheehan has long sought justice for the wrongful death of her own son Casey in the illegal and immoral war against the people of Iraq. One of the reforms that Cindy Sheehan’s campaign and future administration would make would be more comprehensive psychological testing and examinations for applicants to police forces, especially if the applicant is a returning combat veteran as was Erick Gelhaus the admitted murderer of Andy Lopez on October 22 of this year.

Another reform that is necessary and urgent is to institute citizen review boards over local police forces. Community members know what is best for their own communities and often the officers don’t even live in the community where they patrol and commit crimes of brutality. Citizen review and oversight is a must to help rein in crime and corruption from law enforcement.

Men and women who choose to go into law enforcement should not have special rights or privileges that we the people do not have. So called Law Enforcement Bills of Right have allowed crime and corruption to continue and we believe that every citizen, including law enforcement workers, should be afforded the same protections under the law and Constitution, not special privileges.

Cindy Sheehan demands that the Sonoma County District Attorney Jill Ravitch indict Officer Erick Gelhaus in the murder of 13 year-old Andy Lopez. Gelhaus did not even give Andy 10 seconds to respond to his screaming of orders.

Cindy Sheehan sends all of her love and solidarity to the family of Andy Lopez because she truly understands the pain, confusion, and misery that they are going through.

Cindy Sheehan would also like to send solidarity to Andy’s friends and family who are devoted to accountability and justice.

The people of the State of California deserve a Governor who will stand with the people and on the side of peace and justice. Andy Lopez isn’t the first casualty of institutional violence and racism, but if we work together, we can make his tragic murder stand for what we always strive for.

Cindy Sheehan will stand with the community of Santa Rosa and friends and family of Alex Lopez on November 5th at 1pm at Old Courthouse Square in Santa Rosa.

Will Jerry Brown be there to demand justice with the people?
