PRESS RELEASE: WMOP Responds to Yemen Bus Bombing

The Women's March on the Pentagon condemns the killing of Yemeni children on August 9th by U.S.-backed Saudi coalition airstrikes in Dhahian city.

August 13, 2018 -- The Women’s March on the Pentagon (WMOP) condemns Thursday’s attack on a school bus full of children in Dhahian city, twenty kilometers north of Sadaa, in northern Yemen. The attack, resulting in the deaths of 51 people, including 40 children, was perpetrated by the U.S.-backed Saudi-led coalition. While the U.S. has responded to the attack, the Trump administration has yet to condemn it.

The United Nations is calling for “a credible and transparent investigation,” while the U.S. plans to defer to the Saudi-led investigation of its own crime. Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia has already declared that the attack was a “legitimate military operation carried out in accordance with humanitarian law.”

Evidence presented on Monday by Yemeni journalists, links the bomb used in Thursday’s deadly attack to U.S. weapons manufacturers Lockheed Martin and General Dynamics. The U.S. has also provided intelligence support to the deadly Saudi-led coalition, including “intelligence to fine-tune their [the coalition’s] list of airstrike targets.”

With ongoing support from the United States, Saudi Arabia has engaged in active genocide of the Yemeni people, spending more than three years assaulting and destroying Yemen while creating the worst humanitarian crisis on the planet.

The Obama Administration contributed more weapons, military equipment and training to Saudi Arabia than any previous administration in the history of the U.S.-Saudi alliance, topping out at more than $115 billion. The Trump Administration is expected to top that after a May 2017 deal resulting in $110 billion in immediate support with an additional $350 billion expected over the next ten years. The U.S. war machine is clearly bipartisan.

The Women’s March on the Pentagon calls for the immediate withdrawal of U.S. troops from Yemen and the halt of any and all arms sales to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

“WMOP condemns the brutal Saudi regime's genocidal war of aggression against the people of Yemen...we also condemn the USA's support of Saudi Arabia in this genocidal war of aggression and WHY WE MARCH!” Cindy Sheehan, activist and creator of Women’s March on the Pentagon, said of the attacks.

Whitney Webb, journalist and WMOP endorser, had this to say, “The U.S.-backed Saudi-led coalition has repeatedly shown that it will stop at nothing to impose its will on the Yemeni people as they continue to wage total war against Yemen's civilians, including the recent massacre of a bus full of schoolchildren. Were the U.S. government to withdraw its support, the Saudi coalition would have to terminate its genocidal war, saving the lives of millions of innocent Yemenis facing a grisly death from coalition airstrikes, cholera and famine. If the American people were able to manifest a major anti-war movement, we could finally force the government to place innocent human lives above weapon manufacturer profits. If we don't act, the consequences will be unthinkable."

The Women’s March on the Pentagon calls for an immediate end to all U.S. wars of aggression. On October 21st, 2018, we will make our voices heard on the steps of the Pentagon, in solidarity with the people of Yemen and every person affected by the evils of the bipartisan U.S. war machine across the globe.

Barbarians at the Helm (Cindy Sheehan's Speech in Hiroshima August 6th 2018)

--Note: On the 73rd anniversary of the barbaric a-bomb attack on the civilians of Hiroshima, August 6th, 2018, Cindy Sheehan was once again invited to give remarks at the Grand Action for peace there. Below is the text of her proposed remarks.

Thank you for inviting me again and for your legendary hospitality!

We come here today as we have always gathered to not only pay our respects to those who were killed and those who survived, but to bear witness with each other about the horrors and pain of war and our solidarity with those who still live in occupied and oppressed countries and communities around the world.

When US president Obama came to this very same memorial in 2016 (the first US president to do so since 1945), I think many people were expecting better things from him. However, in my opinion, he gave a very meaningless speech filled with pretty sounding drivel.

What struck me about Obama's speech, however, was how he recounted amazing acts of forgiveness by the survivors of that barbaric act --the intentional targeting of civilians--towards America. Obama came and left feeling forgiven by some here, but never once begged forgiveness from the people of Hiroshima, or Japan.

Yet despite Obama's arrogantly pretty words that day, under his regime one TRILLION dollars were approved for "upgrading" the US's nuclear arsenal and left the weapons of mass destruction in the unstable hands of his predecessor and those after him.

I humbly come to you speaking for countless numbers of Americans who feel the same way I do and beg your forgiveness, people to people, for something that happened before most of us were born. I come not only seeking forgiveness, but to pledge solidarity with you all in working not only for a world free from nuclear power and weapons, but also global liberation from imperialism, led by US imperialism and the cancer of capitalism which honors profit over people and domination of resources over the continued existence of life on our planet Earth.

As John Hersey said:

What has kept the world safe from the bomb since 1945 has not been deterrence as much as it has been memory--the memory of what happened at Hiroshima. 

For many of us, Hiroshima stands not only as a symbol of the worse of what can happen in war, but also as a reminder of the resilience of the human spirit. By the constant struggle and love all of you have shown throughout all these decades, Hiroshima has become a monument of peace.

Cindy Sheehan, the co-ordinator of the Women's March on the Pentagon opened the call and welcomed everyone and explained the process.

Bonnie, co-coordinator then talked about the trip to the Pentagon last week where six WMOP delegates went to there to begin the permit process

Bonnie also shared with the group that the officer who met with us has ignored emails from our DC Co-ordinator, Malachy Kilbride, to email us a copy of the application for the permit.

We are marching no matter what---permit, or no permit---rain or shine. This is the beginning of a new movement to resist US Imperialism in a very internationalist way.

Bonnie, Paula and Scott of our Art Committee talked about several ideas for visuals for the march and for an art contest that Scott wants to arrange. 

Cindy then talked about church space for overnighting in DC and her recent trips to DC to meet with the American Postal Workers Union and some local organizers and then to Chicago for a meetup with FURIE and other local anti-imperialist forces.

Jessica from FURIE and from the Steering Committee for WMOP filled in some more blanks on the Chicago visit and groups that came to try and re-energize anti-war/anti-imperialist feelings in Chicago.

Proposal

It has long been the intention of WMOP to bridge the gap between the WMOP on Oct 21st and the events scheduled for November 11th by an event we were calling “Occupy the Pentagon.” (OTP)

Recently organizers of WMOP have spent time doing recon at the Pentagon, and an OTP event won’t have much visibility or impact because there is only one place we can gather and that would be in the so-called “Free Speech Zone” which is only visible from one of the vast parking lots that surround the structure.

After much thought, we have come up with an idea called, “Occupy the War Machine,” which would put WMOP activists into Metro Washington DC, which is about 90% War Machine. Each day after our 10/21 march and rally at the Pentagon, we would call for activists to meet us at a predetermined place within the Belly of the Beast to protest and raise awareness of the true costs of war.

Some ideas for meeting places on those days off the top of our heads: The White House; Capitol Hill; FBI; World Bank; The Federal Reserve; AIPAC; Raytheon; DynCorp; Council on Foreign Relations; Israeli Embassy; FBI, Embassy of Saudi Arabia. (maybe we could have solidarity vigils at some Embassies of countries who are also trying to resist US Imperialism in a show of support).

At each place, each day, (no permits needed for public sidewalks) we would call people to do the normal stuff we do at protests, but especially distribute information to passers-by.

WMOP would provide info and messaging for each day’s location, and a standard “Occupy the War Machine” sign
would be visible.

We will also begin (10/22) and end (11/10) our Occupy the War Machine protests with vigils at the Pentagon.

Our plan is to launch Occupy the War Machine (a subsidiary of Women’s March on the Pentagon) by August 1st at the latest.

Also, we were hoping by now that the veteran’s groups and other groups sponsoring the events of 11/11 would have joined us in bridging that gap and organizing for it. At this time we have had no offers to do so. Once this proposal is accepted, we will use it to do outreach.

When Donald Trump was placed in the U.S. Presidency by the Electoral College vote in the 2016 Election, I observed that, at least in the short run, Trump, with his awkward connection to the Republican Party, would be a less dangerous foe than Hillary Clinton, with the slick Wall Street-backed Democratic Party machine, would have represented to the international working class and the oppressed peoples outside the borders of the USA. Response to A Criticism from ICOR Chief Monika Gartner-Engel

[In late May 2018, the Revolutionary Organization of Labor-USA (ROL-USA), received a brief critical letter addressed to our leader, comrade Ray Light, criticizing his assessment of the ICOR-sponsored October Revolution celebration in Germany in his lengthy article entitled, “Reflections on the Hundredth Anniversary Year of the Great October Socialist Revolution.” (Ray O’ Light Newslatter #105, November-December 2017) The brief letter purports to have been written individually by Monika Gartner-Engel, the Main Coordinator of ICOR. According to the letter, comrade Monika then “placed this letter before the ICC [ICOR’s leading body] and it has been unanimously approved.” The writer asks that the letter be published in Ray O. Light Newsletter, the organ of ROL-USA.
