An explosive, headline-making portrait of
Allen Dulles, the man who transformed the CIA into the most powerful—and
secretive—colossus in Washington, from the founder of Salon.com and
author of the New York Times bestseller Brothers.
America’s greatest untold story: the United States’ rise to world dominance under the guile of Allen Welsh Dulles, the longest-serving director of the CIA. Drawing on revelatory new materials—including newly discovered U.S. government documents, U.S. and European intelligence sources, the personal correspondence and journals of Allen Dulles’s wife and mistress, and exclusive interviews with the children of prominent CIA officials—Talbot reveals the underside of one of America’s most powerful and influential figures.
Dulles’s decade as the director of the CIA—which he used to further his public and private agendas—were dark times in American politics. Calling himself “the secretary of state of unfriendly countries,” Dulles saw himself as above the elected law, manipulating and subverting American presidents in the pursuit of his personal interests and those of the wealthy elite he counted as his friends and clients—colluding with Nazi-controlled cartels, German war criminals, and Mafiosi in the process. Targeting foreign leaders for assassination and overthrowing nationalist governments not in line with his political aims, Dulles employed those same tactics to further his goals at home, Talbot charges, offering shocking new evidence in the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.
An exposé of American power that is as disturbing as it is timely, The Devil’s Chessboard is a provocative and gripping story of the rise of the national security state—and the battle for America’s soul.

Excellent Part One of the Talbot interview, Cindy. Thanks for lining him up to talk about his book.

As we speak, skull-and-bones Kerry is in Hiroshima Japan, lying his ass off, not apologizing for nuking the Japanese or talking about the huge nuclear weapons program in the U.S. Thanks Cindy and David.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, "The Devil's Chessboard" is one of the most important books that has been released in recent history, and another testament to this great work is the fact that it has gained so much positive notoriety which has persevered even through the obvious attempts that have been made to systematically dismiss its importance in the MSM.
ReplyDeleteWhat an extremely compelling story that fully confirms Allen Sr.'s pyschosis was his apparent attempt to brainwash his own son, Allen Macy Dulles, by allowing him to be tortured at the hands of MKULTRA"doctors?", which the book kind of vaguely implies was done because Allen Jr. was randomly and indiscreetly revealing to anyone within earshot, his father's collaborative ties with Nazi war criminals and recruiting them as spies for the CIA. I recently listened to recorded interview of Allen Jr., (he was being interviewed because he was a wounded Korean war veteran) and when he was asked about what he recalled about growing up, he gave a somewhat non sequitur response that kind of startled the interviewer by saying, "Well, I remember there were some very unusual things. I think the basis of it, I have just recently started to learn, was that Allen Welsh Dulles was a German spy." The interviewer hastily redirected the conversation at that point. Apparently the torturous brainwashing wasn't ULTRA successful on Allen Jr. (smile).
Excellent interview, Cindy. I'm looking forward to Part II.
I've never known Salon to be other than gate-keeper. This interview, for me, is very, very disappointing. :-(
ReplyDeleteI just recently finished reading this book. Years earlier I read "Plausible Denial" and it is a good book to get your mind thinking about the Kennedy assasination but "The Devil's Chessboard" connects all of the dots. The world has always been controlled by big business and this book starting with WWII puts the "behind the scenes" leader as Allen Dulles. President Eisenhower warned of the wealthy power of the American Industrial giants and years later President W.H. Bush laid out his 100 points of Light. This book pre-dated these presidents and should be a wake-up call to today's generation but without reading earlier books, one might be lost to follow this book. This book should be read after earlier dated books are read.
ReplyDeleteTo take "one giant step for mankind", this book should be made into a movie... ASAP.
